Pupil support/ Pastoral
Peebles High School has 5 Principal Teachers of Pastoral Care who provide individualised pastoral support for each pupil. This ensures that each pupil knows and is known personally and in some depth by a member of staff. Pastoral staff are responsible for all curricular, vocational and personal matters concerning pupils in their caseload and are the main point of contact for parents. Pastoral staff have a number of important tasks in addition to their teaching commitments which include:
- To maintain regular contact with caseload pupils to review progress of learning and personal and social development. This includes planned and crisis interviewing as necessary
- To contribute to the development and delivery of a high quality PSE programme
- To be responsible for curricular advice, careers planning and matters relating to progression for identified caseload
- To maintain Pupil Progress Records (PPRs), Pastoral Notes and Confidential Files (as appropriate)
- To track and monitor achievement and attainment of caseload, including individual target setting
- To liaise as appropriate with subject staff, SMT and parents as appropriate
- To liaise with associated primary schools, ICS and other external agencies as appropriate
- Preparing and compiling reports and references and attending reviews, hearings and Meetings Around the Child (MACs) as necessary..

In Peebles High School we have a team of teachers and other staff, who provide specialist support to pupils who may experience difficulties in their learning. Every opportunity is taken to establish the nature and extent of a pupil’s learning difficulty as soon as possible: close liaison with our associated primary schools means that information on individual pupils is available to us before the pupils join us in August. For other pupils, already in Peebles, individual subject teachers monitor closely the performance of pupils and are able to request additional support for any pupil from learning support staff.
Pupils experiencing difficulties with their learning may be helped in a number of ways:
- Providing direct one-to-one help from a learning support specialist teacher
- Allocation of an additional (co-operative) teacher to the class
- Advice to classroom teachers by learning support staff
- Referral to specialist services, eg Psychological Services
- Arranging a case conference for pupils with additional support needs
- Providing specialist resources
- Agreeing with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) for special examination arrangements to be made where appropriate.

Integrated Children’s Services
Peebles High School works closely with external partners to support pupils. Within the locality; Social Work, Education, Police and Health staff work together to offer advice and coordinated support to pupils and their families. Getting It Right For Every Child
The Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) is the National approach which ensures that anyone providing support puts your child at the centre. Practitioners work together to support you and your child and where appropriate, take early action at the first signs of any difficulty. This means working across organisational boundaries and putting your child and you at the heart of decision making, giving all our children and young people the best possible start in life.
GIRFEC means that everyone working with Scottish Borders children, young people and their families are being encouraged to:
- Ensure children, young people, and their families get the help they need when they need it and are central to the process of finding solutions.
- Use one consistent and equitable approach, actively share information to agreed protocols and work more effectively together to improve outcomes for children and young people.
- Be clear about personal responsibility to do the right thing for each child/young person.
- Work with children, young people and their families, using a collaborative approach with fewer meetings. This should ensure children, young people and their families give information only once, and enables the development of one plan to meet all their needs.
- Respond to children and young people and take appropriate, proportionate and timely action with the minimum of paperwork, bureaucracy and duplication.
GIRFEC is part of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014 and the GIRFEC provisions have to be fully implemented by 1 August 2016. The multi-agency approach of the Scottish Borders is to phase in this implementation. If you would like any further information please ask your child’s Headteacher.
Peebles High School aims to ensure that all members of the school community feel welcome, safe and happy in order to progress in their learning. Bullying behaviour of any kind prevents this from happening and is therefore unacceptable. Dealing with bullying behaviour is the responsibility of all members of the school community. In 2012, we reviewed our anti-bullying policy and invited input from students, staff, parents and external partners. A working group was formed, known as the PHS Respect Group and the policy produced was re-named the PHS Respect policy, in accordance with the shared belief that bullying is a behaviour which is based on a lack of respect for others. This is a whole-school policy which is realistic, effective and responsive to need.

We have also recently introduced a new support for pupils and parents called “Not Alone” in partnership with local groups including our Locality Integration Officer. Pupils receive support with regards to bullying behaviour from senior peer mentors and pupils and parents can use an online reporting system to make bullying behaviour referrals to Pastoral staff.
